Netflix Movie Friday: The Mystery Team

A DVD movie this week! Some of you may know Donald Glover from his work on the hit TV show Community. However some people are familiar with his work in Donald’s music career or with his popular YouTube channel Derricks Comedy. Either way Donald Glover and the rest of the misfits at Derrick Comedy went and made their first full-length movie called The Mystery Team. Is it comedic gold? Find out more.

The Mystery Team follows a team of 7 year kids who made it famous in the neighborhood as kid detectives. They called themselves The Mystery Team. From then on they would become known as the detectives who would solve petty crimes like who stuck their finger into the pie and stuff like that. Jason (Donald Glover), the leader of the group, is also the master of disguise, Duncan (DC Pierson), the boy genius, and Charlie (Dominic Dierkes), the strongest kid alive. Now they’ve grown up but their thoughts about mysteries haven’t changed. Caught up in a real world murder mystery, The Mystery Team must now find the killers and maintain The Mystery Team’s reputation.

The Mystery Team is super crazy. If you liked their sketches on YouTube then you’ll be right at home this time around. The same writers write all the script as their YouTube channel. It’s crude, it’s funny, and it’s downright spot on for all their humor. The complete gullibility of The Mystery Team is the entire charm of the movie and it’s done really well.

As it were, all the comedic staff from Derrick Comedy is present in this film whether they’re on film or just in the back being a director. Donald Glover did good with both the writing and the score of the movie. Donald pretty much is playing the same role as he does have in the popular Community TV show, which is not a bad thing at all. Charlie, played by Dominic, is probably one of my favorite characters of the movie because almost everything he says and does really is either offensive or just really stupid, like him trying to explain sex instead of poking the eye out.

The only problem that I’ve found humor in these kinds of movies is that the jokes move so fast that you have to keep notes if you plan on missing any bit, but that’s fine. There’s not really much in the way of special effects or theatrics other than the basic gun fights and person flying out of a movie van. You’re not watching this movie for anything other than the crazy humor and story. It’s clear that Donald and the rest of the Derrick Comedy troupe got their work on the NBC Community. If you want to see what Donald was like before that show watch The Mystery Team.
